Hotels in and around San Ignacio, Belize?

For my dad's 70th birthday coming up in April my brother and I are flying with him to Belize and need to find a hotel. We plan on staying around San Ignacio for the most part and then likely going out to some of the islands towards the end. If you've been there, can you provide any recommendations on where to stay? We'd be looking at something in the middle range, not too low end but not crazy high end either. Probably looking more for a standard hotel rather than a resort. I've been reading through a travel guide but it's hard to tell just from the descriptions. Any advice you can give would be appreciated. Thanks! Also, tips on what to do and see would be great as well.

I visited San Ignacio last April. I stayed in a hostel, so I can't recommend a hotel, for as for things to see and do in town or nearby:

- A tour of the ATM Caves! This has to be done with a guide. (I used Mayawalks and was happy with them.) You have to climb up and down some ladders and squeeze through several tight spaces, but it's not terribly physically demanding and would be fun if your dad enjoys adventurous activities.

- I also did a tour of Tikal National Park, which is a UNESCO World Heritage site a two-hour drive away in Guatemala. You can visit this yourself if you have a car, but I was glad to go with a tour because it made crossing the border easy.

- Cahal Pech Archaeological Reserve is a small site with Mayan ruins. Fascinating place to walk around in.

- I believe the San Ignacio Market runs every day, but is busiest/biggest on Saturdays. Great atmosphere, lots of vendors, and tasty food.

- Green Iguana Conservation Project if you would like iguanas to crawl all over you!
