Today's young jazz vocalists in the traditional style

My teen has recently gotten into Frank Sinatra. What are some contemporary young jazz vocalists in the traditional style? Ideally non-white, and even better if they are up-and-coming so that we can see them perform in the NY area. (This question is partially inspired by Samara Joy's Grammy win - what other rising stars are out there?)

Best answer: For me, the single greatest living jazz singer, who also is young, gifted, and Black: Cécile McLorin Salvant. (She is a visual artist as well!)

Best answer: Charles Turner is a fantastic crooner, and these days I believe is singing with Eyal Vilner - they’re both based in NYC. (He has albums on Apple Music!)

Best answer: At 40 she is not young, but Lizz Wright is a contemporary and fantastic jazz vocalist. Her music is rooted but also feels fresh.

Best answer: Esperanza Spalding has a classic style, amazing voice, and is a hell of a bassist too. Also: idk what young is maybe if that's important you could clarify?

Best answer: Catharine Russell is also fantastic, though has been being fantastic for decades. She’s playing Birdland next week.

Hear her charm on I Can’t Believe That You’re In Love With Me.

Best answer: Jazzmeia Horn. Also, her band has the coolest name ever: Jazzmen Horn and Her Noble Force. Cécile McLorin Salvant has been nominated for and won numerous grammies, so she's to really up and coming. Jazzmeia Horn has also been nominated a bunch, so she's in the same boat. Bit the nice thing about jazz singers and musicians is that no matter how big they get, they're still playing in smaller venues.

Also, although she doesn't meet all your criteria, Diana Panton definitely sings in a traditional style and has a fantastic voice.

Not really jazz, but Leon Bridges has more of a classic soul vibe, circa 50's and 60's (Sam Cooke, Ray Charles, etc.).

You might want to check out the NYC lindy-hop dance scene - there is a LOT of live music both for dancers and by musicians who love to play for dancers. Trumpeter Gordon Au, for example, runs multiple bands out of NYC. Eyal Vilner, mentioned above, was recently on tour with the rockstars of contemporary lindy hop on the SW!NG OUT tour. There are regular live-music gigs at Mona’s, The Ear Inn, etc. Probably lots of great vocalists to discover there (as well as the dancing and its history, which are pretty fantastic, at least according to a die-hard lindy-hopper like myself). Facebook is the place to poke around for dance and event info, if you’re on it.

She's a friend (though also very well known & beloved here) and is based in Australia so I don't know when she'll get a chance to go to New York, but check out trans femme PoC jazz cabaret star Mama Alto!

More Charles Turner! I’ve danced to his performances, and he is just lovely. I’d love for more people to know him. He has a great little tune on Bandcamp, very appropriate for a fan of Frank: Swag.

Live at Lincoln Center: When You’re In Love.

Live at some cave-y jazz club called 38Riv: Honeysuckle Rose

Angie Pastor has a great voice. Most of her videos don’t have lots of views but I bet someday she’ll be more known.

Best answer: Sachal Vasandani has an incredible voice, sings a lot of standards, and has dates at Dizzy's Club at Columbus Circle in April.
