iPhone SE: Podcast App Will Not Let Me Do Anything

The inbuilt Podcast app on my phone will not cede power. No matter what I try to do, the podcast app brings itself back into the foreground. I can't quit the app, I can't restart the phone, I can't do anything. Help me.

If I try to switch to another app, or quit the podcast app, or shut down my phone, the podcast app just grabs the spotlight again. I can hold the right buttons down long enough to get the "shut down phone" slider, but the instant I let the buttons up, here comes the podcast app again. I've tried force restarting, but it doesn't work either.

This happened once before, a week or two ago. I don't remember how I got out of it that time; I think perhaps it wasn't so bad and I was able to restart my phone. Now I literally can't. Anything I try to do that involves pushing any of the buttons, fails as soon as I let the button up.

I would prefer not to have to reset my phone to resolved this. Please share your ideas.

Response by poster: To add: I have googled, and tried to follow tips like, "Put the phone into and out of airplane mode," but I can't put it into airplane mode. I can pull up that screen, but the second I take my finger off the phone, Podcast again.

What you want is a solution that bypasses the "shutdown silder" screen. I've been there.

You don't say whether it's a recent gen SE or an earlier one, but if you follow these steps for the newer models it should work:

Press and quickly release the volume up button.
Press and quickly release the volume down button.
Press and hold the side button.
When the Apple logo appears, release the side button.

I had to do this eons ago with an iPad, and luckily I was at a conference and sitting next to a tech coach. You should be able to bypass the shut-down screen make it restart without you touching the screen or ever seeing the slider.

If yours is older and running iOS 15, there's a link on that page for the instructions, but you should hold the sleep/wake button and home button down until it restarts and you get the Apple logo, and then you can let go.

Either way, I recall the process taking MUCHMUCHMUCH longer than you'd expect. My friend had said it could take up to 20 seconds, and I think I held it down for almost a minute before the Apple logo came up. Like, so long and so hard that my thumbs hurt.

Good luck.

Response by poster: My phone went to sleep, and when I woke it up again, it was working OK. I restarted it just to clear any accumulated bit crud or whatever makes computers get confused once in awhile.

Wrong Kind of Cheese, next time I this happens I will go with epic patience as I hold the button down.
