Home internet connection monitoring?

Looking for a tool to monitor and log when my home internet goes out.

The past couple weeks I have happened to be up and online in the wee hours a few times and almost every time I witness my home internet (Comcast) go offline for an extended period. Is there anything I can run on my home network that will detect and log when these outage events occur? If this is going on every night I will need to figure a way to address the problem, as my home security system is intenet-based.

You could use SmokePing for this.

There are lots of good suggestions on this Reddit thread.

Best answer: I was running through a similar issue previously, & ended up going with Net Uptime Monitor. It looks like it's been around for a while, but it works well. Being able to go to Comcast support with "Ok, here's every time in the last month that my network dropped, and for how long" helped get them to send a technician out.
