Going to Oaxaca for Day of the Dead - any tips?

We've been to Oaxaca once before in the Spring and absolutely loved it. We are returning for Dia de los Muertos and are seeking tips for the best (and most respectful) way to enjoy the festivities. If you have tips about where to go/what to do during the festival (or things to avoid) please chime in!
