Please help me remember this ancient food essay

This goes back, possibly to the late 80s! The writer had to host a very famous food writer or restaurant critic. She (pretty sure the writer was female) fell back on Smithfield Ham, brandied peaches, tiny fresh peas. Possibly there was a cheese souffle? Before the august guest came she held a "practice dinner" with her family. When the actual guest was there, one of her children spilled the beans about the rehearsal dinner. Any ideas? I remember it as amusing, and would like to reread.

Best answer: Is it Everyday Matters: A Love Story, by Nardi Reeder Campion? ("She's at her best describing the diverting ups and downs of their life together, such as the time she had to cook dinner for Times food critic Craig Claiborne"; this sample mentions Claiborne, Smithfield ham, and brandied peaches.)

(And Mrs. Tuck spills the beans about last night's practice party when Claiborne compliments her on the cheese souffles.)

Response by poster: That's it!!! I was sure I read it long before that, but what is time, really? Putting on the library holds list now, thanks so much!
