How to make a 9 month stay in Italy work?

I am a US citizen considering a temporary move to Italy next fall. Help me figure out if the Digital Nomad visa is an option!

I have a remote job that I’d be keeping, so looking at the available visa options it seems like the very recently enacted “Digital Nomad” visa is a good fit, but it isn’t in effect yet and there are no resources that I’ve found (in the English language news) that say when it’s likely to be implemented.

Do you know any more about the visa, or have tips on where to look, to know when it’ll be available?

Am I missing any other strategies? My company does have offices there but I don’t know that they’d transfer me and sponsor a visa for less than a year.

These are two recent articles about it from the main Italian business newspaper, linking these here so you can put them in Google translate and get an idea:

"Lavoro: nomadi digitali, una norma per attirare talenti dall’estero - Il Sole 24 ORE" https://amp24.ilsole24ore.com/pagina/AEHtWhNB

"«Nomadi digitali», come funziona la nuova legge per venire a lavorare in Italia - Il Sole 24 ORE" https://amp24.ilsole24ore.com/pagina/AERHQPSB

Both articles mention a further interministerial decree is expected to be approved shortly (no indication of when exactly) to define further details of this new visa for digital nomads ("Spetterà a un decreto interministeriale definire modalità e requisiti per il rilascio del permesso").

A useful keywords search in Italian to keep up with news about when the new decree will come into force would be "visto nomadi digitali Italia decreto"

Hope this helps a bit!

What is the main reason for your trip - is it 'work while on extended vacation,' or something else?

There are various permesso schemes to look at: Cinformi has a good list with descriptions and forms.

I was able to stay in Italy almost 11 months with a 'Permesso di soggiorno per attesa cittadinanza' which allowed me to stay until my jure sanguinis citizenship case was recognized (I did not work or pursue work while there). But this was a very specific permesso for my specific case, and was not easy to navigate, time-wise or bureaucracy-wise.

Do not have specifics but one one detail take a deep breath and allocate triple the amount of time you'll need to deal with paperwork. Oh and use an approved translator and allocate time to take the perfect translation back for a revision, sigh or two. (would insert a smilie but omg)

It'll all be worth it just for the food.
