Help me remember this book!

British novel, the protagonist goes by the nickname 'C'. His actual name was something very English, like Cyril, although that might not be it.

I came across it in the late 1980s or early 1990s, but it may have been written well before that. The only other thing I remember clearly about it is that the characters frequently interspersed French into their conversation.

Does anyone know what book this is?

Best answer: "C" by Maurice Baring? His name is Caryl, according to goodreads.

Response by poster: Thank you! I was only finding references to the McCarthy novel, which was written much too late. It is, indeed, the Baring novel!

I found it by going to Google Books and doing a search for "C said" and once this book turned up, I searched inside for the word "Le" to confirm the presence of french passages. Same strategy I used to identify a book with a character named "Watch" many years ago (Search for "Watch said").
