Kickstarter tips for books

I'm launching a Kickstarter fo a book project that already has fan support. Have any of you done this successfully? Appreciate any advice / answers to questions within.

Some specific questions I have:

-What's the best way to estimate printing costs? I haven't picked a printer yet. Should I do that first?

-Should my target goal include paying myself for the work, or does that all come after?

-My book is about a musician/album--can I use any images or music at all in the book trailer?

Best answer: I've produced/managed a few projects in the range of 200-500 items.
I think you should resolve or estimate as many details as you can. Printing, processing, and shipping. By "processing," I basically mean packing and shipping labor, and maybe some customer service back/forth. Of course that will be an estimate, but it's better than nothing.

Printing costs can range wildly depending on quantity and printing method.

You have to figure out what the goal is. Some people use it as promotion gain audience for later sales, some people as a way to reach a critical mass so that doing a "passion project" pays for itself. Some people want to make money.

I can't answer copyright issues, but my cursory searching shows what I'd expect: That album covers are reportedly treated more loosely, though they are of course copyright. Fair use claims take account for "criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, and research." To that same end, it seems like scholarly work is more readily defended. i.e. "An analysis of native-american elements in the music of Jimi Hendrix" is more easily defended than "Jimi goes to Mars."

I think audio is more tricky, and I feel like I've already offered to much poorly informed input.

Best answer: “images or music at all in the book trailer”
Nope. No fair use in advertising or fundraising. I work in documentary, and have worked on projects that were shut down for using un-licensed or un-permitted images, music, clips, etc..
