Multiplayer Game Recommendations

My friend and I have too much time on our hands. Help us kill some hours with Playstation multiplayer time wasters.

Buddy and I started playing games together over the pandemic and we need to find something new to sink our teeth into. Here’s what we’ve played so far:

- The Forest (Huge hit)
- Fall Guys (Stopped after season two, no desire to replay)
- Predator (It was….fine)
- PGA 2K21 (Good for a quick round of nine holes)
- Risk Of Rain 2 (Fun but no real depth)
- Streets of Rage 4 (See above)
- Broforce (See above)
- Overcooked 2 (See above)
- Helldivers (Lot of fun)
- Deep Rock Galactic (Same appeal as Helldivers)

We have no desire to play Minecraft, Terraria or Stardew Valley. We recently tried Stranded Deep but the multiplayer is too buggy for long-term potential. Helldivers and DRG worked very well because of the variety and they were “hard enough” – we could bump up the difficulty if we wanted a challenge or leave it on easy if we just wanted to kill some aliens. Ideally we’d love to find another survival game that isn’t a buggy mess. Traditional sports games (The Show, Madden, NBA, etc) are usually a pass.

Gamers of Metafilter, I implore you. Please help us find our next time sink. Playstation only (I’m PS4, he’s PS5).

Spelunky 2 is my vote! Impressively deep, random gameplay with a lot of depth in terms of what you can do/try, and there's a sort of meta progression going on that works well with 2 friends playing remotely.

My friend group has been playing very similar games to your list. I'd add:

Stardew. Yes there's "no desire" but I still recommend it. It's just that good. There's combat mines and challenges and you really don't need to play parts of the game you haven't. My group that loved Helldivers and drg really clicked with it.

Divinity original sin 2. It's different than what you list but great coop experience.

Payday 2.

My husband and I enjoyed
Ark basically a survival with dinosaurs
Survivalist It has an interesting mechanic where you control monkeys to do the work for you.
Astroneers - no fighting and more base building and exploration of planets
Don't starve together - You can set your server to be easy or difficult (it can be very difficult if you want it to be) one of my all time favorite games! well made and continues to get updated.
Not survival but I hear Fallout 76 is pretty good now despite the rocky beginnings

Fallout76 has been pretty fun and silly. I recommend the Borderlands series, especially Borderlands 2. I'm playing Tiny Tina's Wonderlands now and it's hilarious and entertaining (it's a bit like an FPS version of Diablo III).
