Seeking Online School Recommendations for 8th Grade Student

I'm looking for recommendations for online school for my 8th grade daughter. She is experiencing extreme depression and anxiety, and has been hospitalized twice since September, though is doing a bit better now and is back in normal school. However, she is having a lot of trouble making it to her normal school and has requested to try online school. Any questions for me can be sent to mfanon42@outlook.com Thanks for your help Mefites.

This is going to depend on where you are. Are you in the US? If so, which state? What are the homeschooling laws in your state? Does your state offer a free online school? Are you religious? If so, do you want your kid to be in an online school with a religious perspective? Is your kid going to be home alone or will there be an adult in the house who can help?

It's going to be hard for anyone to answer your question without knowing more details.

I’m not personally familiar with it but I know others have found helpful info at the SEA (Secular, Eclectic, Academic) Homeschoolers Facebook group.

I’m sorry you and your child have been going through all this, and I hope an online option helps.

Here's a very recent list of US states that offer free virtual school.

We tried one of the free online schools, and it didn't work with my kid's learning style, the lessons weren't great, and it demanded a regular-school style time commitment.

Another option, which my 14-year-old son is enrolling in for next year, is Clonlara. Based in Ann Arbor, Michigan, they've been doing distance learning all over the world for decades. They do have a day school, but their distance learning program is much more affordable (about $1300/year, less for your middle-schooler, though I can't remember the exact amount off-hand). They incorporate life learning and things your kid is already doing—my son's diving, dog training, entrepreneurship (he has run a dog-training and dog-walking business since he was 10 or 11), and even his "real" job at a sandwich shop could count for school credit. Students design their course of study with the help of an advisor, and for a bit more money, they do offer online classes that can be taken a la carte. We're very excited about it. As a long-time homeschooler, I've been aware of Clonlara for years and years, and have always had a very good impression of the work they do.

Clonlara is still enrolling for this school year. They are very flexible.
