Spotify wrapped questions

Wonder some things about how Spotify wrapped works…

One main thing is - why do they tell you your “year end” stuff a month before the year is over? My only theory is that they feel like you’ll mostly be listening to holiday music in December? But I’m wondering what happens to all the listens that take place in December - do they roll over to the next year, or are they just gone into the abyss?

They are apparently ignored.

I imagine one reason they do it earlier in the month is because they want to encourage people to gift subscriptions for the holidays.

I think they wanted to model it after Magazine top-50 or whatever lists. They would be written a month early to make the December issue. And how many new albums release in December? The numbers are out there somewhere ...

I doubt it’s got much to do with there not being many releases in December. (e.g. You can already see your 2021 exercise summary in Strava, despite that not being affected by a release schedule.)

If you look at these, and “The Top Fifty x of 2021” lists, as marketing it makes more sense to publish them before the end of the year. Once we’re in 2022, stats about 2021 already feel a bit old. But in December 2021 they feel current, about now, and so more interesting and shareable (which, these days, is what everything’s all about).

I've noticed that a LOT of end of the year lists, not just Spotify, are out the first week of December.
