Need new podcasts: Left Leaning
December 9, 2021 11:28 AM   Subscribe

Hi I have Washington Post and The New York Times Subscriptions so I am aware of their podcasts. I have a few other liberal podcasts I listen to but need new ideas. My goal is to get a list of liberal podcasts and Radio shows to listen to. To get me through the Holidays. Sorry if I offend anyone here not my goal and I respect others choices as long as they don't call the president the administrator in chief, and Democrats - the - commie Socialist party. Sorry I learned those titles from my in laws - Cheers

It Could Happen Here by Robert Evans (& co). Initially started off with as a speculative fiction podcast abt a potential 2nd civil war in the USA set sometime in the future as a reaction to presently ever-increasing extremist Right, but has since evolved into current events relating to pipeline protests, how to build community networks, how to cope with and address climate catastrophe, critiquing & investigating global supply chain issues, etc etc etc.
Note I don't agree with *all* of the positions on this podcast but it is still a valuable take.

I'm not sure if you're looking for explicitly political podcasts, but if you aren't then check out Maintenance Phase is wonderful and absolutely left-leaning in its treatment of wellness fads, bad science and policy on fat, and more. (I haven't yet listened to cohost Michael Hobbes' other podcast, You're Wrong About, but I think it might get into politics more.)

As a subset (?) to Pod Save America, I love the Hysteria podcasts. Also recommending:
You and Me Both with Hillary Clinton
Now & Then with Heather Cox Richardson and Joanne Freeman
The Problem with Jon Stewart

If you want a left podcast analyzing things you don't like, I think Know Your Enemy is pretty great.

My favorite is Pantsuit Politics, which features two smart and opinionated friends who dissect the news and culture of the day with thoughtful nuance. It began as a (kind and respectful) left vs. right discussion of politics, but the extremism of the Trump era has moved it (and the hosts) into more of a left vs. center approach.

Are you particularly looking for daily news, history, political science, social commentary, something else?

For year-timescale current events with nuance, I'm a fan of "From Our Own Correspondent." For lefty news that is often good and only occasionally cringe-worthy, "Democracy Now" is an old standby.

(Seconding Robert Evans and his colleagues in general. "It Can Happen Here" in particular isn't my taste, even though I agree with their goals and conclusions. But, you might like it.)

This New Yorker article introduced me to “Know Your Enemy,” mentioned above, but also to:

Time to Say Goodbye
Left Anchor
Death Panel (my favorite of the bunch so far)
The Dig

Not particularly lefty, but fascinating and compatible with lefty: Trump Con Law — What Trump Can Teach Us About Constitutional Law with Elizabeth Joh and Roman Mars.

You know Roman Mars from 99% Invisible, and at some point they're gonna have to drop the "Trump" from their title, because it's getting more into just neat bits of Constitutional Law, but Elizabeth Joh is a law professor, and they use various Trump actions to get into discussions of law, and I find it well worth the time.

Some others that are news/politics/discussion. I know there's a lot of hate on MeFi for NPR and PRX-produced programs, but I still find the podcasts/shows below affiliated with them very informative and interesting.

The Daily (NYT, too--did you mean all of NYT's podcasts?)

On the Media (WNYC)

This American Life (WBEZ/PRX)

QAnonAnonymous (Qanon debunking and discussion)

nthing the Pod Save America podcasts- one of theirs that hasn't been mentions is Lovett or Leave It which is a comedy podcast but still very left.

Also:
The Guilty Feminist - UK based but very left.
Majority 54 - specifically aimed at helping lefties talk to/persuade non-lefties.

How left do you want? On the left-but-not-too-far-left side, there's the Slate Political Gabfest and most things from Slate that touch on politics at all.

If you want much further left, then how about some anarchists? Like Like the World Is Dying by Margaret Killjoy is excellent.

The Bugle, audio newspaper for a visual world, starring Andy Zaltzman and a rotating collection of comedians from around the world. (okay, really just from the UK, Australia, the US and India). It was started by Zaltzman and his longtime collaborator John Oliver, and follows a very similar political bent, albeit with more puns. Zaltzman and his guests are pretty middle of the road, but that's a European middle, which would make them raging leftists in the US. (Nato Green, one of the regular American guest commedians, is a card-carrying, union organizing leftist).

When you're tired of the news, there is a sibling podcast called The Gargle hosted by Alice Fraser, covering all the silly non-political news that they can.

Seconding Lovett or leave it. This is about the funniest podcast I have ever listened to and has a lot of liberal and diverse guests.

Citations Needed, a podcast on "power, PR, and the history of bullshit," is an indispensable podcast by two journalists focused on deconstructing and examining the media narratives that come to shape our understanding of the world.

5-4, a podcast about "why the supreme court sucks," is 3 pretty funny lawyers examining some of the worst rulings that some of the dullest legal minds in our nation's highest court have ever produced, as well as the reasons they came to the conclusions that they did.

Also check out True Anon if you are mentally ill, it's pretty funny.

What a Hell of a Way to Die is two lefty veterans shooting the breeze and also discussing military, veterans and world affairs. I have no particular ties to the military but enjoy this show immensely.

Also, Mary Trump just launched a show called The Mary Trump Show. I haven't listened yet but have really enjoyed her appearances on The New Abnormal and The Daily Beans.

Seconding Citations Needed and 5-4 - such incredibly in depth media and legal analysis. Two of my personal favorites.
