Workflow for Google Drive/Google Docs with multiple folders?

I am using Google Drive to facilitate teaching a class. I created a folder for each class, a folder for each student in that class, and for each student various other folders with their assignments, mostly on Google Docs. I want to know the ideal way to manage the grading of these files and folders.

The obvious solution is to use Google Classroom, which I do in fact use at my other school, but at this school, GC is not an option. They do have their own LMS, but it's actually even worse than Google Drive; students would have to upload Word files which I would need to download and check one by one, a slow and painstaking process.

Yet Google Drive is not all that much better...on the browser I have to click, click, click to get to the individual students' work, also a painstaking process. I have synced the Drive to my computer (a Mac) and can access it through the Finder, which is better, especially with the column view. Problem there is the .gdoc file can actually be seen or previewed in the Finder--it's just a kind of bookmark until you double click it and it opens in your browser.

I've looked for plugins or apps or whatnot that can provide an easy workflow with this, but haven't found anything. Any ideas?

Best answer: Google drive's website has a search box at the top of its folder view. Not when you're within a document, just when you're looking at a parent folder. It is, admittedly, a skinny white box on a white background. It should give you the same functionality as Finder. To open a search result in a new tab, right click and open with...(Google).

Response by poster: That's a great workaround, why didn't I think of that! I can sort by "last modified by" and check all the assignments that I didn't modify, i.e., completed assignments by students. The preview lets me at least look at everything; it'd be perfect if I could make comments on the preview screen.

*sigh* Google Classroom makes all this SO much easier.
