Financial / Estate planning Attorney

Trying to identify / retain progressive / left leaning attorney to provide financial, RE, EP advice in a deeply red state. My state is presently Missouri, YMMV.

Have a number of estate planning, etc. issues for a 7 figure portfolio, and am wanting to both take care of my own and give back to the community that made my modest success possible. Not interested in lining the wallets of those who would finance objectives counter to mine. Halp?

Individual contributions to political campaigns are public record and are searchable on this FEC site. So if you have an attorney's name, you can look up their political donations.

I would approach this by networking. Is there an organization in your area that closely aligns with your values? Check out their website/socials to see if they have an attorney (doesn't matter their area of practice), call that person and ask for referrals. If you can't find an attorney, a membership or outreach director probably knows who to introduce you to. State exactly as you do here that it's important the professionals you work with carry similar values, and that you need an estate planner with experience with HNW planning issues.

I would suggest that you look for the most reputable estate planning/tax lawyer you can find in your area and then make an appointment to talk with them and get a sense of compatibility. In my (lawyer) experience, most reputable/competent lawyers are going to work to implement the client's wishes, regardless of politics. I think it would be a mistake to start out looking for a left leaning lawyer rather than to start by looking for the most reputable/competent lawyer and then assessing that person for comfort/compatibility.

Besides, many top lawyers in cities like STL and KC support liberal causes, so I think you'll have a good chance of finding someone very compatible with you by simply looking for the best practitioner.

I'd start with your local chapter of the National Lawyers' Guild. You could reach out to the contact person and ask for a referral from among their members.
