How does the drive-thru dairy work??

I live in Southern California, where there are quite a few drive-thru dairies.
Do you utilize this service? How often? Why? Do you just buy milk, or a whole bag of groceries?
How does it work? What do I do? Is everything in view from my car? Do I just point at what I want? Are prices clearly marked? Do they take credit?
Just drive through one, you say?? I can't. I hate the thought of a pimply-faced teenager looking at me like I'm a 35-year old imbecile becaue I don't know drive-thru-dairy etiquette.

I use this service every day. Think of it as a drive-thru 7-11, rather than a dairy -- you wouldn't usually buy a bag of groceries, but supplemental stuff like .. milk, butter, bread, snacks, juice, soda, and of course beer and so forth.

You drive in. Optionally, you get out. In california, you must have both feet on the ground in order to buy alcohol. The guy comes to the car and asks what you want. Everything is pretty much clearly visible, but on the first try you might go and look around just to familiarize yourself with all the options. Prices are clearly marked, or in line with your general expectations. They normally don't take credit.

Thanks for this question, clh. I was wondering the same thing. And thanks for the answer, felix.
