Boston Area Movers for 1 Mile
May 31, 2021 1:22 PM   Subscribe

We are moving about a mile. Movers sound like they would be useful and back saving. Any recommendations for Boston-based movers?

We will most likely do the packing ourselves in rented reusable crates. Moving in about a month (*not* a September 1st move! Woo!). Neighborhood: W. Roxbury

Welcome any additional tips for an in-neighborhood move in the Boston area, including who to use for reusable crates.

Hi I have used Rare movers and they were excellent. Don’t know about crates though.

Best answer: We used Stairhoppers. They were totally straightforwardly fine, rolled with a moderate amount of chaos, and got stuff done.

Additional tip: if you haven't already, double-check when you need to apply for parking signs for the truck. Trying to get them at the last minute is a pain in the ass.

We have used the uhaul moving services. They contract with local companies. They have always been hard working folks starting up a business and uhaul has pretty strict rules. If something goes sideways they sort it out and stop using that contractor and apparently are pretty strict. We had 3 guys to unpack our 4 bedroom house and they suggested 4 hours. They were done in 90 minutes. Guy literally patted me on the shoulder and told me to check off boxes as they went by....

Last time we moved (2012, yikes) was about the same distance as your move. We used Intelligent Labor and they were great. I think it ended up costing around $1500 and took a full day.

We used intelligent labor for a similar (though even shorter, only three doors down) move in Somerville a few years ago. I also thought they were great.

Best answer: I was also impressed by the rates for Stairhopper, used them for our last two Cambridge moves. Not fancy, but good.

I don't even know if they still exist, but I used A-Plus Moving in 2015. They moved me during one of that winter's blizzards, even though they had to split a team off to go to the hardware store to buy shovels to dig a path into my courtyard. (They did drop one thing, but that seems about average for non-high-end movers.)

Spry does all our moves (including one in Cambridge that was less than a mile!). Highly recommend.

Best answer: We have also used Stairhoppers for our last two in Boston moves and were happy with the rates and the service.

I used Mini Moves about two and a half years ago for a move a few blocks away, and they were fantastic. (It looks like they have a two hour minimum for Boston.) I was moving a one bedroom apartment, without a ton of furniture, but including 2 big Ikea Kallax shelves, the books that live on those shelves, a futon couch, and a full size bed, plus kitchen gear, etc.

They were absolutely quick and professional, and came in about an hour under what they'd estimated for me (and charged me accordingly.)

It looks like they don't do crates: my last two moves I have packed most things in cardboard bankers boxes, and have had no problems finding people who wanted to take them off my hands to reuse them.

If by crates you mean rubbermaid (or similar) plastic totes, call all your friends and do a bike move. Loads of fun. Plus it's outdoors so it's great for social distancing.

Response by poster: Thanks for all the suggestions -- I've started quote processes with a few.

Regarding crates, I was referring to renting reusable moving crates.

While a bike move might have been enticing to a younger version of myself and my friends...not this time. :)

In case you want one more, we had a great experience with Mozart Moving. Happy to share more details if you want them.

Response by poster: We ended up going with Stairhoppers, which had the best rate for our "peak" moving time.

For anyone referencing this later, we are using Box Save for reusable containers.

Response by poster: As a final conclusion:
- Stairhoppers were professional, fast and competent. They were the lowest estimate for a July 1st move and if you pay in cash, you get an additional 10% off. The final price came in close to the estimate, even though the drive time was longer than expected due to traffic (coming from East Boston to W. Roxbury), and I was low on my estimates for our stuff. I'd use them again.
- Box Save was perfect for reusable crates. The drop off and pick up were hassle-free. The crates were sturdy and clean. For any future moves, I will be using crates if at all possible -- it saved a huge amount of time in collecting, building and breaking down boxes. The movers seemed to like them as well. All that and NO TRASH!
