Can I have my fence built? Ontario Covid restrictions question
May 20, 2021 1:08 PM Subscribe
Can my contractor install a new fence, or would doing so violate Covid restrictions in Ontario, now?
I've pushed the project back multiple times. I do see a lot of similar projects being done in my area.
My contractor is semi-retired and only takes on a few projects. He isn't clear on the restrictions, but is happy to do the project now or wait. He works by himself mostly.
I would love to get this project complete, but will wait longer if need be.

Lumber prices have dramatically increased during the course of the pandemic.
A 2 by 4 has almost tripled in price from 2019.
i know of a number of jobs being postponed due to the price increases

Also in Ontario.
I can't cite the regulations, but a local contractor has done work on our yard and has us on the schedule for some more (and his crew is across the street). He told us that it took them some time to get clarity on the regulations but that they were confident they were allowed to proceed.
Anecdotally, I've seen a lot of contractors working outside and in in our neighbourhood.

while you can do this, I agree with yyz: lumber prices will make it impractical right now. Maybe get your contractor to do a cost estimate?

From the CBC: But according to provincial guidelines, all residential renovation work including landscaping is considered essential. "Residential construction activities, projects and related services are considered essential," confirmed Kalem McSween, a spokesperson for the Ministry of Labour, Training and Skills Development.
