Second Tax Refund?

Did you get a second tax refund from the IRS?

We got our expected tax refund from the IRS about a month ago. Last week, another refund mysteriously appeared in our bank account. It's actually for more than our first refund. It's an odd amount, though, so it's likely not another stimulus payment.

A quick search shows that there's a refund coming for people who filed for unemployment last year, but that doesn't apply to us. There's also some kind of refund going out that's tied to healthcare costs, but that one seems to require a special form (not the 1095A) to be filed, which we haven't done.

Any guesses?

Possibly a very untalented (or unlucky) identity thief? Best to call the IRS; they're actually super helpful on the phone in my experience.

It's an odd amount, though, so it's likely not another stimulus payment.

I made too much money in 2020 for my Biden bucks to be a round number. It was prorated out to very precise dollars and cents. An odd amount isn't necessarily incorrect.

After filing our 2020 taxes we received another stimulus check unexpectedly. you may have received one too.

Yes, the same thing just happened to me today! This is the 2021 Economic Impact Payment.

If you go to irs.gov/coronavirus/get-my-payment you can look up the details for your account. There are a few hurdles to jump through if you have to create an account, but then you can see the details of what stimulus payments were sent and when.

I still haven't gotten my actual refund, but I did get a letter saying a 2021 impact fund would be deposited in my account in the next 7 days. I already got the earlier one, so I guess this one is different.

I got a payment for the third round deposited to my bank account on April 21. I just got a letter in the mail today informing me about it. It was also for an odd amount, because due to my income last year, I am entitled to only a pro-rated payment. It was not rounded to the nearest dollar -- my payment included 88 cents.

Start at the Get my Payment page (noted previously) to check the date/bank account for your most recent payment. From there, there is also a link to sign in to your IRS account, where you can see your payments for all three rounds. In my case, I had to have them mail me a code to get the account set up, so it took a few weeks from start to finish. While you're in your account, you can also pull your transcripts, to see all other payments the IRS has made to you.

I had been very confused about this payment until I pulled my IRS transcripts from 2020 and 2019. It turns out that due to the deadline extension in 2020 (for filing 2019 taxes), and because I filed late but was owed a refund (which was therefore paid late), the IRS paid me interest on the refund in August 2020. Because of a fortunate income situation in 2018, I had assumed that that (very small) amount was my second payment, and my second payment was my third payment, but cross-referencing the payment amounts with my IRS transcript, I was paid my 2nd stimulus payment on Jan 4, 2021, and my third payment on April 21, 2021.
