Let's play Name That Dog!

It's time for another round of AskMe's favorite gameshow! I just rescued a chihuahua mutt who hails from the back roads of Mississippi, and now it's time to Name! That! Dog! Step inside for pictures and the current names in the running.

Here are a few photos of the new friend. A few pertinent details:
  • She is fearful because of her history, yes, but I think it's likely that caution is part of her personality as well. While she will clearly love to play, overall, she's a calm dog who is always on the lookout to be sure she's fitting in with her surroundings properly.
  • She has a strong, STRONG pack instinct, and doesn't seem to care to be the alpha.
  • She is quite small -- 10 lbs.
Here are a few names in the running:
  • Peanut
  • Bean
  • Dot Matrix
  • Mouse
  • Turtle
  • Biscuit
  • Monkey
  • Pixel
  • Whistle
  • Starling
  • Kazoo
  • Valentine
  • Missy Elliot
  • Sprocket
About me: musician, nerd, gamer, tech person, generally whimsical, love walking in the woods.

Vote for your fave, or add to the list. Help me get this lovely pup ensconced in her fabulous new life with just the right name!!

Why yes, Bean is the correct answer. That sweet girl is indeed a Bean (aka Jellybean, aka Jellybelly, aka Belly)

Grover jumps out to me as a great name for your pup. Otherwise, Missy Elliott is a winner, too.

Best answer: I like Peanut. She is small and brown and has a little bit of a shell. (Augh, so cute!!!)

From your list, I am very partial to Turtle.

Additional suggestions: Maisie or Gidget

Best answer: I just named a new dog! I came up with a bunch of names and let him choose (i.e. tried them all out and paid attention to what he responded best to).

In general dogs are most responsive to two syllable names with a long vowel sound because they're sing-songy and call well.

She looks like Rusty. I grew up with a best friend neighbor kid named Rusty. They drank their baby bottle well into 8 years. Needless to say, I was very jealous.

I vote for Kazoo as in the Kazoo from the Flintstones. Looks a little like him. Otherwise, Peanut.

She is super-cute, maybe a little dachshund in there? A traditional name for chihuahuas is Taco. Bean Taco. Taco Biscuit. Pixel Biscuit. Ginger Biscuit.

Also love Dot Matrix from your list.

I was going to say Peanut even before I saw that it was the first name on your list. I would also offer up Butterscotch or Snickerdoodle as other good food names for this little dog.

I once had a very dear Maine Coon polydactyl tuxedo cat who came to me with the name Missy. I thought it was kind of a short name for such an elaborate cat, so I lengthened her full name to Mississippi and kept Missy for short. I propose that this would also be the perfect name for your lovely girl.

I think names should be related to personality rather than appearance. Her appearance is instantly understood, but her personality? It's lovely to be able to give a little introduction to it through careful naming.

Usually I can't resist looking at the photos, but this time I did. Finally. Actually it's the first time I've resisted.

So, here's what appeared in my mind:

Cassandra

It started with your description of her caution, but it goes further:

The girl who once was dismissed and never believed would certainly be cautious, in a deep,c considered way, even after she has finally found a safe place. She now is grateful to be accepted as part of a group, but never wants to draw attention to herself by leading.

Also, it's a nice name. You can call her Sandy if she's being silly.

Now I will go look at the pictures!

Her full name is Ms. Mississippi Mud Pie Elliott, but her friends call her Missy or Muppie.

Response by poster: Once again, you folks have outdone yourself! I love every answer, but based on the general sound/feel of the word, what resonates with me conceptually, the overall gut-feel of the group, and what she seems to respond to, I'm thinking Peanut is her new moniker. AKA Nutter Butter, Nutsy, etc. etc. etc. , w/ the odd "Bean Dog" thrown in when she's being especially endearing. After all, she's still in the legume family!

Thanks everyone!

For the feels -- she is becoming less fearful by the hour, with her loving quirkiness shining through. It was hard to find an appropriate rescue dog this time around, but damn I'm glad I did.
