Georgia Unemployment

I have a weird situation with being laid off in state of Georgia in USA and I'm not sure who to contact at the Georgia Department of Labor (GDOL) about this seemingly unique situation. Anyone familiar with how GDOL works?

My (now former) employer in the USA state of Georgia furloughed the staff in summer of 2020 and filed unemployment for us, and everything worked fine in terms of promptly receiving benefits.

Fast forward to this year and I got laid off from that same employer on at the end of March. I did apply for Unemployment Benefits on 4/2. Got an email immediately from GDOL on saying the claim was received and that I would get another email when the claim is processed.

I tried to claim benefits for the week ending 4/10/2021 (and subsequent weeks) on the website and got the following message: "Your employer filed an unemployment claim on your behalf. You are not required to claim benefits weekly or report your work search. You may check My UI for your claim and payment status.”

Checking My UI shows the payments for 2020, but nothing to indicate the new claim for 20201. I still can’t claim any benefits due to the above and it’s going on three weeks. I am unable to claim benefits or report work search.

What should I do next? I've called and left messages with the Georgia Department of Labor. The system seems to think my now former employer will apply every week for me, but that's not happening due to being laid off.

I dug around a little in the Atlanta Artist Relief Fund Facebook group because they post a lot about Unemployment Insurance and I figured there would be something there. GADoL recently released this graphic (hopefully you can see that) and it led me to google BYE (Benefit Year End) - I'm not sure exactly from your description but it seems like you may be in a weird state because of BYE ending/renewing and your former employer might be able to clairfy what's going on? I'm so sorry if you knew all of this already and I hope someone else has better answers.

FYI, the Unemployment Reddit is extremely active and you may find others in a similar predicament.

Best answer: When all my theater friends were navigating various unemployment woes early int he pandemic a few suggested that contacting their State Representative helped get their 16 week old claim etc. unstuck in the system. Might be worth a shot.
