How to Become a Tax Policy Consultant or Lobbyist?

I am an accountant with a strong interest in tax policy, and am involved in local politics and civics. I am launching a (small) accounting and tax firm this summer, and would like to include tax policy consulting and/or lobbying as a service that I offer. But how do I do that? How do I land clients and what specific services should I offer them as a tax policy consultant and/or lobbyist?

Not sure where you live. Some states require lobbyists to register and to follow strict disclosure rules. Here is the site for how to do this in California.

I recommend you set up an informational interview with a lobbyist or lobbying firm in your state in a field not competitive with yours. You can learn more about the business aspects of lobbying in state that way.

If you proceed with lobbying, it will redefine how you are political. Your interactions with your favorite politicians may be transformed by law.

I would recommend that you include as part of your daily routine a review of new and pending legislation offered in your state's legislature, how the pending bills are being discussed in committees, etc. Your state's Chamber of Commerce is going to be actively involved in all of these issues, so making contacts there is highly recommended.

In the current environment, consider starting a Substack newsletter on these issues. You want to be the go-to resource on these topics in your state.
