Filing 2020 taxes quickly after finding out I didn’t file 2019!

Is there a way I can file taxes for 2020 without having filed in 2019? I keep getting my return rejected for “incorrect 2019 AGI”. The SO and I don’t want to miss the $1400 checks!

I “filed” my taxes in 2019, but apparently it didn’t transmit. It was during the onset of the pandemic and I somehow managed to finish but not actually transmit my taxes via my HR Block software. Well, now I find out we won’t be getting stimulus checks even though our income has been cut 50% this last year unless we file our 2020 taxes, like, now.

Problem is, my 2020 return is being rejected for “incorrect 2019 AGI” because, duh, I never filed last year.

I’m happy to pay the small fee and the few hundred I owe for 2019, but I’m told I will have to do a file-by-mail with copies of all my 2019 W2s. I can do this, but it’s going to take me a few weeks to get the paperwork together (I’m an idiot and didn’t keep our W2s).

Is there anything I can do?

Have you tried entering "0" for prior year AGI? I know it's counter-intuitive but this generally works if 2019 was unfiled. It's just a verification step, it will not affect your 2019 or 2020 taxes.

My son did the same thing and the answer was entering '0' for the prior year AGI. Then he sent the 2019 that he had a miniscule refund for by mail. I bet he forgot to send it...

But with that zero AGI he already received his refund which included the $600.00 second stimulus for 2020 which was based on 2019 filings as well which explains why he never received it.

You will need your W-2s but who is saying you can't file 2019 electronically? TaxSlayer allows my volunteer group efile previous year returns. See if they will allow you to file electronically.

This isn't helpful if you're in need of that third check ASAP but it's highly unlikely you'll "miss out" on any money you're eligible for, it's just becomes when and how you'll get it.

For the first two stimulus payments, if someone didn't get checks for the full amount that they were entitled to, they'll get the rest of that amount in the form of a refundable tax credit on their 2020 returns. If you don't get your taxes sorted out before the third check goes out, there will probably be a similar mechanism in place for you to get the payment somewhere down the line. Eventually the paperwork will catch up, the IRS will realize you should've gotten a check based on your reduced 2020 income, and there'll be a credit or something somewhere for you to claim the amount you should've received.
