Have you watched One Lane Bridge and can you explain the ending to me?

One Lane Bridge I watched the series and liked it for the most part [possible spoiler: there is a horrible homophobia sub-plot], I especially enjoyed the amazing locations - New Zealand is breathtakingly beautiful. But there seem to be quite a few missing pieces and I am not sure about the ending. If you watched it, what is your take?

For what it's worth, here are the two threads on Reddit.com/r/NewZealand discussing the series, and the consensus is that the ending is very unsatisfying and doesn't explain a lot of open questions.
