Is MyTrueIdentity.com legit?

Like is say on the tin. Is MyTrueIdentity.com a legit service for signing-up for credit monitoring? Details inside --->

My son recently received a 4-page letter in the mail informing him of a security breach of admin software used at a bank in another state that he used over ten years ago. The letter itself looks pretty legit, and is similar to such letters I've gotten in the past.

The letter states that the maker of the bank software will be providing a year of free credit monitoring through TransUnion. Again, this is similar to other such letters I've received. The instructions in the letter say to go to MyTrueIdentity.com to enroll in the credit monitoring. The letter provides a code to enter. It also says there will be three questions for my son to answer. That's the part that my dad-radar kind of sends up an alert on. It doesn't say what those questions will be. The last thing I want is to give him the ok on this, and it turns out to be a relatively elaborate phishing con.

So...HiveMind...Has anyone any dealing with this MyTrueIdentity.com? My gut says this is probably legit, but I felt like I needed other opinions.

Well, it looks like MyTrueIdentity is a legitimate service run by TransUnion.

The domain registration looks OK, as does the certificate. You're not being directed to some sketchy URL as you would in a phishing email, so there's that.

You could probably phone TransUnion to verify that the letter was sent by them if you're in doubt. It's kind of a scammy-sounding domain name though, and not one I would have chosen if I was trying to instil trust.

The questions asked are probably similar to those asked at any credit site to verify identity. Have you ever lived at one of the following addresses? If so which one? In what year did you buy your most recent car? Select from the following (which will include n/a). Stuff that in theory only your son will know.

I have an account with transition true identify service so I thought this would be easy to confirm. When I go the Transunion site, I see this page with a link to their TrueIdentity site. when I log in, it goes to the page whose url starts with Membership.trueidentity.com
The mytrueidentity.com page has a different look and style than the membership.trueidentity.com. So, no reassurance there.

I will say that any time I have had to answer questions to confirm my identity in this context, the questions will be things like which address have you ever lived at and it will give you the choice of three plus none of the above. (And sometimes none of the above is correct) All multiple choice so they aren't asking for anything they don't already know. Although sometimes their records are messed up and the "right" answer isn't actually right. Maybe a quick log in and see if they ask for information beyond name and registration number and then use multiple choice question to confirm or if they ask for things like social and date of birth.
