Where can I practice shooting my new shotgun for free in central Texas?

I bought a shotgun and would like to familiarize myself with its usage. Where can I practice shooting it for free in Texas? I am willing to drive anywhere in Texas, but the closer the better. Thanks!

Where in Texas do you live?

Response by poster: I live in Austin, I don't think there is a place to shoot free near Austin, but maybe somewhere in central Texas!

Burea of Land Management or National Forest land where target shooting is not otherwise prohibited. You can use the tools on their websites to find out, or call the closest ranger station to you and ask.

you can ask around at your local sporting goods store for locations, or even events or classes. I know you said free, but if you are 100% new to shooting sports, and not just looking to refresh what you already know, some kind of opportunity to learn from someone is far better than plinking--and safer.

if you go on your own to blm land, it's totally on you to practice unasailable range safety. anyone could walk into your area at any time.

On reddit, /r/Texasguns is the place to ask. Every state has its own subreddit for guns, and tend to be helpful for people looking to shoot, fix guns, find ammo, or support gunrights. You don't have to be all-of-the-above.

I would strongly recommend that you find someone who knows what they're doing and have them go with you, and learn range safety. Shotguns can be unreliable (especially new ones) and if something goes wrong mechanically, you may have a loaded, malfunctioning firearm. Worst case scenario, someone may be injured and other other person can get help.

There are lots of gun related message boards. I see Texas Gun Tall and Texas Gun Forum, for example. Usually you can read these things for free, and on some you can post for free. If the chat looks safe enough, go ahead. In general I would expect them to be more civilized than Reddit.

Texas sold off the majority of their BLM land, especially around Austin. Lone Star Gun Range down in Lockhart has a decent shotgun range.
