Wii Rock Band 3 guitar guide?

How to I learn how to play the Wii Rock Band 3 guitar? I am a moderately skilled amateur percussionist and all I want to do is chuck this piece of crap straight through the TV.
I think a big part of the problem I'm having is it's hard to tell exactly when the strum is playing the note. With the drums you can see your notes as you are playing them, even if they're wrong. The guitar seems to show your notes only if they're right. How do I ever get to the point where I'm getting a decent number of them? You can go into "practice" mode but that doesn't teach you, just lets you practice. Is the "strum" of the note as you pass the midpoint, or at the bottom when it clicks? My questions are that basic.
I'll never be good enough to be paid, but I do play with the volunteer local orchestra that requires auditions. I'm better than some and a lot worse than others, but I can definitely play in unison with a group without particular effort. I play snare, bass drum, and cymbals halfway decently, and in-game that seems to be fine.
I ran through a manual calibration and got delays of like 90ms audio and 50ms video. The auto calibration says 125ms audio and 5ms video. That seems like a fairly big difference. I've got a 2020 LG CX OLED TV and a cheap Sony soundbar running on ARC (Audio Return Channel) over HDMI. Is it possible that's what's screwing me up?

I'm not sure if you're doing it already but you can and should press and hold the note button with your left hand before strumming instead of pressing and strumming at the same time.

As to what exactly counts as a strum: if possible you may want to try picking up a used Wii Guitar Hero guitar, as opposed to a Rock Band one. They should be completely interchangeable with one difference being that a Guitar Hero guitar will click when the strum occurs, while the Rock Band guitar will travel freely, making it difficult to tell where the strum occurs. For this reason I have always preferred the Guitar Hero hardware, but it appears to be a matter of preference.
