is it youtube or is it me?

For the past few weeks, I have noticed when I listen to music on youtube, the sound is off. Everything with my system is fine.

I checked the output to the speakers. The balance, etc, everything is fine and has not been changed. Here is the problem: it sounds like about half of one channel, usually the left, is diminished. It sounds as if some of the sound that would usually come through normally, comes through either not at all or very quietly. As I used to run a soundboard many years ago, it is as if the sliders on some of the channels have been turned down.

All other music sources are fine. Streaming, CDs etc. They work fine. It is just youtube that is on the blink. Again, the speakers and settings, etc, are all normal and working.

If you have Windows this YouTube video is a good starting point for troubleshooting https://youtu.be/-_8KRGo6TXI . The beginning has suggestions that are a little too obvious but continue watching for more advanced troubleshooting.

I have had Youtube audio problems when I used Chrome for a while; have you tried using different browsers? Or settings within YouTube itself?

I had a similar problem for a bit and eventually realised that I was to blame because I had muted the tab in Chrome once and it remembered that setting until I actively turned it off again.

I had a very strange problem with a Windows 10 PC, where the audio worked fine in YouTube, but not in Zoom calls (there was no audio output in Zoom). I tried doing multiple reboots and uninstalling/reinstalling Zoom. None of that worked. What finally worked was attaching a different set of speakers to the PC. I still don't understand why that worked, but there you have it.

Have you tried changing any of the youtube quality settings? It's possible that it's trying to stream in a bitrate or quality that your system doesn't agree with.
