Can an end user of Google Apps tell if Google Vault is enabled?

My workplace uses Google Apps for Education for staff communications, files, etc. A colleague of mine asked if there was a way to tell if Google Vault was enabled or not.

When he asked the IT department, they were evasive and didn't really answer. This could be because the person he asked really didn't know, which is possible, or didn't want to divulge this information for some reason.

Is there a way for an end user to tell if Google Vault is enabled for a particular account or for the whole domain?

I don't think that there is any way for an end user to determine if Vault is enabled or not. But I can tell you that it's off by default.

No way to tell as a user. But it should be something that's subject to policy or governance in a well-managed organization (especially in education), and you might get a clear answer about the general rules applied in your workplace if you ask your CIO or CISO or equivalent. They may not respond but they tend to be oriented in a more holistic way to 'the service of the institution' as well as being the place where the buck stops. Worth a shot.

If you have an Ombuds position there's a chance they could carry an anonymous question to the same leadership and bring back an answer, as well.
