What’s a great non rated M game I can play with my 8 year old around?

We have family game time on weekends - kiddo plays iPad, wife plays on switch and I play on PlayStation 4. Just looking for a game that doesn’t have a massive amount of swearing or huge amount of bloody violence. Perfect recent games were Horizon Zero Dawn and Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order.

They both have violence (but not exploding heads, although there is some blood) also their is some light language (hell, damn). So doesn’t need to be T title but only a few M titles would probably be acceptable. She won’t be playing but will be around and likes to watch sometimes but doesn’t have to be “easy” or anything as she isn’t playing.

I generally enjoy first or third person shooter games in addition to the ones noted above I enjoy call of duty, tomb raider, Wolfenstein - they are just too much for her at 8.

If wandering around a large open universe, buying, selling, and building stuff are things you find fun, No Man's Sky is worth a look. Not so much if you play games for constant simulation/combat, though. There is a small bit of that, but it really just serves as an interruption to the normal gameplay.

Hades came out from SuperGiant games recently and is both extremely fun to play and entertaining to watch. Cartoon/stylized violence, and the tone is surprisingly light considering the plot involves your being repeatedly murdered by friends and family.

Response by poster: I should add - not interested in multiplayer games.

Also presence of a decent plot or at least an “end” is a plus.

I was about to suggest Hades because it's awesomely great, but sadly it's only available on Windows, Macintosh, and Nintendo Switch for right now. Supposedly a PS4 version is in the cards, but it's not on the Playstation store yet.

If you haven't played superhot you might enjoy it for a few weeks - very minimalist 'bad guys' who are basically red figures that explode into glass shards when shot, and the time moves when you move mechanic is interesting both to play and watch.

Spider-man is a fantastic game with a story and no violence past fisticuffs (there are guns, but no blood and spidey doesn't use one)

so is THPS1&2 but no story and no end

Maybe Ghost of Tsushima? You play as a Samurai, during the first Mongol invasion of Japan. So far I'm enjoying the game, the combat is very fun and it is open world with a main story and lots of side quests. The art is beautiful. It is quite tame in terms of super adult content, the main thing is blood/gore in battles and there is an option to turn that off so you could do so when your daughter is around!

Spider-Man is where it's at. Ghost of Tsushima is fantastic, but even if you turn gore off there's several potentially upsetting scenes with stuff like: beheading, suicide, burning alive, and animal death.

Have you played the Mass Effect games? They're a bit too much on the FPS side for my RPG loving tastes but the story and writing are (mostly) there. They're also like a decade+ old so I apologize if this is unhelpful. The Dragon Age games are also good and have gore settings.

Sky: Children of the Light is a game for iOS (not sure about the other platforms, but it is great on an iPad and fine on an iPhone).

Gorgeously animated, immersive, really fun, and totally G-rated with no interpersonal violence. There's a pretty epic story. It's free -- there are in-game purchases you can get to change your avatar faster, but they are not necessary.

Ratchet and Clank is fun. Star Wars Battlefront is pretty tame and has split screen. Battlefront 2 isn’t as good. Shadow of the Colossus. Plants vs Zombies has a few ps4 games, although they’re more designed for multiplayer. They have split screen too.
