I've stayed at the Rosedale on Robson recently, and it was quite nice if you're looking for something with a small kitchen. It's in Yaletown, and is walking distance to a lot of the downtown attractions, although Stanley Park is on the opposite side of downtown and probably worth spending the money on a cab.

I really liked Times Square Suites, which is right on Stanley Park. Rooms are going for CA$129 right now.

Do not forget to check out the reviews on TripAdvisor, too.

What time of year? And what do you mean by cheap?

Hands down, The Sylvia Hotel is the best hotel for visiting Vancouver, BC. Extremely reasonable rates, right on English Bay, walking distance to Stanley Park and Robson, and a block from plently of fun, eclectic restaurants on Denman. Also a short walk to the mini-ferry that runs continuously to Granville Island. Highly recommended.

In the same neighbourhood: the Buchan Hotel -- a little rundown, but a great west-of-Denman location (if you stay there be sure to eat in Parkside, the restaurant in the same building), and the Coast Plaza Hotel & Suites -- kind of boring and corporate, but great views and nice-sized suites.

By the way, the Sylvia and the Coast are pet-friendly in case you want to bring the pooch.

I was planning on posting a similar question, as I'm planning to be in Vancouver in early June for a few nights. The Times Square Suites look perfect. Thanks for the pointer.

For what it's worth, I really don't care for the Sylvia. I've had friends stay there before, and though the location is great, the rooms have always been, in my opinion, very poor value for money, and depressingly dim, drab and threadworn.

At Northern Voice, the main hotel was filled up so I stayed at the YWCA Hotel a block away. I got a single with shared bath for a very reasonable price!

stavros, I've heard that the rooms in the Sylvia's new wing (the one they built for Expo) are much nicer. I haven't seen them myself, though.
