How do I get user content and ratings on my site?

Is there a software package or script I can get that will allow me to enable users to add content to my web site and enable other users to rate that content? I am not a programmer, so something that is pretty simple is preferable. I would like the content to be sorted by showing the highest rated first. Thanks.

Google content management system for some starting points on this. There are in fact many free/open packages you can use.

Scoop is one.

Are you looking for a digg clone?

Response by poster: Sort of like digg, but not quite. Actually, more like the random facts generator. I messed with it last night, but the programming/techie stuff was too complicated for me. Is there a WYSIWYG program or script I can copy in that will do it for me? If not, how much (roughly) would it cost to get somebody to do the random facts programming for me? It would be real simple - no frills, just like the Jack Bauer site.

I dunno... it seems like a pretty simple, small task. I bet you could have someone do it for you for $50-100. You might just want to post an ad on your local craigslist.

That said, it's a good first project if you want to try to learn how to do these things... just pick up some kind of "Learn PHP/Mysql in 24 hours" book and after a few lessons, you should be able to throw something together fairly easily.
