Hip hop roller skating; is this an actual scene, a holdover from roller-disco, what? Thanks in advance.

It was made up for the film.

Response by poster: Actually, I should say, that comes as a relief.

This guy breakdances on rollerblades!
His pictures.
My pictures (self link obviously): [1] [2]

His sculpture stuff (from the main page) is pretty fantastic too

Could someone clarify what is meant by "hip hop roller skating" in this question, and which film? Apparently I haven't seen it...

Ah, I just read the Blue and I think I see what you are referring to. (I always read AskMeFi before MeFi these days.)

There was a lot of jam skating in the late '70s-early '80s, and skaters skated to proto-hiphop like the Sugarhill Gang and Kurtis Blow. Basically rinks held on to disco for a long time and started playing early hip-hop as that became popular.

Whether this is relevant to your question, I am not sure as I haven't gone through the links in the ATL post yet.

I don't know about 70's and 80's but back in 2001 or 2002 United Skates in Edison, NJ did a "R&B" night every Saturday night, from like 9pm to 1am. It was 99% African-American, everyone doing crazy moves on quad skates. When I saw Roll Bounce a few years later it reminded me of United Skates (which, sadly, moved to a very white town and brought an end to R&B night).
