Okay, So We’re Doing This
June 22, 2020 1:58 PM   Subscribe

This sweet doggo literally followed me home last night from over a half a mile away. No collar, no microchip. I put a pic up on a lost pets Facebook group but right now it looks like I have a new dog. And I need to call him something. That’s right, it’s time for a dog naming post!!! Preferences/description inside.

So right now his body is (very badly) clipped though his fluffy head and tail indicate that he’s going to be a fluffy dog. He’s super thin at the moment but his head and paws are giant so I think he’s a Big dog.

He’s the sweetest dog ever. He just puts his head in my lap and closes his eyes for pets. I haven’t heard him make a sound yet. He might just be quiet or he might be getting settled in. Right now he’s sleeping a lot but has shown signs of wanting to play. I think he’s malnourished and will perk up once I get some food in him (soonest appointment I could get with my vet is for a week from now, but we’re taking feeding slowly with several small meals a day).

He seems like a big kind gentle giant dog. Stately but baleful. He needs a sort of serious name. I give dogs people names, so nothing like Sport or Snowball. My other dog is Gatsby and my name also starts with a G so this one shouldn’t because I’m not that cutesy.

Thanks!

There’s a giant dog in our neighbourhood named Clovis. It suits him. I think it would suit your dog too. (He looks like a wonderful dog!)

I'm a fan of naming strays after the place they were found. It could be the neighborhood, or the road, or the park, or whatever works best as a dog name.

My friend has a dog that looks similar and one of his nicknames is Friend-Beast and the other is Falkor! (Don’t forget to contact the local shelter, and nextdoor if possible - he’s probably loved if he’s gotten a recent summer haircut.)

Please call your local shelter/animal control and send them this picture. Also post on NextDoor. The owners might be frantic looking for their pet. One night is way too soon to claim this dog.

What a good, sweet boy! I think he looks like a Rupert or a Charles.
posted by mezzanayne at 2:35 PM on June 22, 2020

Response by poster: I tried to call the shelter but the automated system only allows for options that involve giving them the dog and I can’t get a person on the phone. I’m not on next door. I posted where I could. If the owner shows up, of course I will return the dog. That being said, he is very skinny, has some skin issues/bare spots in his fur, and overall seemed to be a very neglected dog. While he’s with me and to make him a vet appointment, which he needs, he needs a name.

I’ll stop thread sitting now.

He could be neglected or he could have been lost for a while. Chances are good that this is your dog now, but please do keep trying to reach the shelter and consider signing up to NextDoor or asking a neighbor who is on it to post about the dog for you.

Imagine what you would want someone else to do if they found your dog.

posted by Pax at 2:53 PM on June 22, 2020

Response by poster: I also reached out to my friend who volunteers with the shelter to ask around and see how to get him into the system without surrendering him. Please believe that I am doing everything I can to find his owner. (Which is more than my vet flat out told me to do after seeing his condition and scanning him for his chip.)

Sorry. I really will go away for a while now.

Gatsby would have been a great name for the new one since Jay Gatsby is blond, but keeping it within the same literary milieu, I recall the hero of Hemingway's The Sun Also Rises, Jake Barnes, as also being blond.

'Barnes', then.

Albion. Sounds dignified and references his white coat. You can shorten it to Al or Albie.

Albion, the earliest-known name for the island of Britain. ... The Greeks and Romans probably received the name from the Gauls or the Celts. The name Albion has been translated as “white land”; and the Romans explained it as referring to the chalk cliffs at Dover (Latin albus, “white”).

Nobody goes around grooming stray dogs (however badly). If someone cared enough about a stray to trim it, they'd adopt it or bring it to a shelter. That dog has an owner, and one who at least cares enough about their dog to worry about it getting overheated or matted.

I would be really, really cautious about judging too much based on skin issues (which are notoriously difficult to treat even with expensive medications and diets) and being a little thin (lots of potential non-malicious explanations for this). It's also really hard to tell how underweight he actually is - the photos could be misleading, but he doesn't look too far away from the ideal body condition score of 4-5, and it's usually recommended to keep giant breeds lean to reduce strain on their joints, particularly if he's young. He could be neglected, but he may well have a loving owner who misses him, so it's great that he's in the shelter system now. I'd suggest putting up a few posters in the area you found him, as well.

24 hours in is way too early to be naming him, but it's great that you're willing to give him a home if the owner isn't found. Make sure you read up on livestock guardian breeds, which he appears to be - these are not easy dogs to own.

Response by poster: I’m basically treating him as a foster dog at the moment. He’s up on a bunch of found dog sites and in the shelter system. But unless or until his owner is found, I’m treating him like he’s mine because that’s the only way I know how to take care of a dog. And you need to give the vet a name to make an appointment, plus I need to call him something.

I’ve been calling him Bentley.

Is it too late to suggest a name? I like Barnaby (the name if a very large and friendly dog in The House of the Spirits), but Gatsby makes me think you might want a literary name from a similar author/period. Hemingway might fit that bill. I can’t recall any Hemingway characters with memorable names except for Santiago (from The Old Man and the Sea); though Hemingway makes a nice choice as well (and ends in an -ee sound, just as Gatsby and Bentley).
