Help identify this tree seed pod!

Please help me to identify this seed pod. This is what the seedlings look like.

For what it's worth, I gathered these seed pods from the Cultural Harmony Grove at the base of the Burrard Bridge in Vancouver BC. The tree was dormant at the time so I don't have any leaf or overall tree pics (except for the seedlings). I'm not positive, but I think it was this tree here.

The tiny seeds germinated easily but I'm having a problem where all the seedlings in a given pot die suddenly, at the same time, for no discernable reason. I'm hoping that knowing what kind of tree it is will help me get some of them to survive!

Look like elm seeds to me, and the seedling is consistent with that. Don’t have a guess on species though.

Response by poster: Yeah that's totally it! Thank you!! By the looks of it I might be watering them too much. Interesting to see how widely hated this tree is--insanely fast growth, copious seed production, prodigious regrowth from the giant, foundation-destroying roots. Fun!
