Metal "thingy" that covers vacant Air Conditioner slot

Where can I buy a replacement cover for the air conditioner slot?

Typical apartment in Brooklyn has typical "Fedders" type air conditioner slot below the window. I used to have a unit in there until I replaced it with a window unit. Regrettably I mistook the metal sheet that covers the vacant slot for scrap metal and recycled it. Without going to Super or Landlord, how can I get a replacement cover? I've been freezing like an idiot for three years.

Can you build a simple wooden replacement? You could even cover the outside of the slot as well as the inside and put some insulation between the two.

Response by poster: I wish I could but I haven't the tools to do it. Right now I've duct taped some cardboard to it and piled blankets in front of it, but I really want a replacement cover and I can't seem to find one.

Best answer: Does it have to be a flat sheet or will this inside AC cover do ya? A flat metal sheet for a through-the-wall air-conditioner opening sounds like it might be a custom manufacture for the building(s) A machine shop could make you a replacement sheet given the right measurements, although it doesn't seem like a metal plate should block the cold too well anyway.
