Finding a stylish pair of sunglasses

I like to think I have pretty good style, and have never had any problem picking out shirts, pants, shoes, suits, etc.

That said, I find sunglasses to be the most perplexing part of the male wardrobe.

What constitutes a stylish pair of sunglasses? What things should I avoid when shopping for sunglasses? Any brands I should avoid, or should aim for? Eyewear faux pas? Educate me on all things sunglasses. (Yes, I know this is a very subjective question.)

Some of this has been covered here.

Eyewear faux pas = anything that makes you look like a character out of The Matrix.

Well you mention Gucci. If you like traditional style sunglasses (as opposed to the Oakley/Matrix type) you can't really go wrong with Gucci. I owned a pair and they were pricey but fantastic qualiy, and very heavy which makes them a lot easier to wear IMO. I have had Ray-Bans in the past but I found them a little "plasticky." I heard a lot of the lastest Gucci mens sunglasses are a little bling-y and flamboyant, but you can find previous designs on eBay cheap.

If your taste runs to minimalism and classics, it's hard to beat Serengeti Medium Aviators in a driver's gradient. I've had two pair in the last 12 years.

Can you give us an idea of your personal style? Types and brands of clothing...

Be aware that a lot of A-brands all come from the same factory. The Italian Luxottica Group makes frames and glasses for almost all fashion brands. This could be helpful information if a salesguy tries to push you to a more expensive brand. I bought a pair Persol glasses [model 2672S color combo 24/31 which means turtle frame and dark brown/greenish glass] because it looks good with a suit or with casual wear. I like to avoid carrying around logo's on whatever it is I wear, they have a classic look and they wear very comfortable. I'm not the one to teach you what style you like, but try to avoid mirror sunglasses as they are the equivalent of white sox. After two years of frequent wear, my Persol still feels solid and is virtually scratch free and I hardly use the beautiful case that came with it. All in all I can say that it was an expensive product (100+ euro's) but well worth the money. Now go to the shops and release your inner shade lover.
