What is the name of this book about chocolate cake and a burro?

I have vague memories of a children's book that would have been published in the United States before 1985 or so. Any of the following details might be wrong. My recollection is of a boy who had some chocolate cake that he wanted to share with his neighbors. Visiting the neighbors involved taking a dirt road up a hill. The boy was accompanied by a burro, who may have been responsible for carrying the cake. The book had single-color illustrations in a realistic style throughout. What is the title of this book?

This is not a precise answer, but more like a possible clue, because according to my favorite source for questions like this, Vintage Kids' Books My Kid Loves, there is a "classic tale of the miller, his son and the donkey" that involves traveling with a burro responsible for carrying something, so it seems possible that the book you are thinking of is one of the many variations that apparently exist.
