Nursing school

My wife is thinking about going back to school to become a nurse. She has a BFA and is a fairly high level manager at a wireless company. We had a close friend die 6 months ago and she as felt a great need to do something more meaningful to her. We live in the NYC area. Is there a "best" nursing school local to NY? What sort of classes will she need to have completed to get into nursing school?

Columbia's nursing school is very well thought of.

Best answer: I just applied and was accepted to several nursing programs (direct-entry to master's) as career-change.

I don't know about NY-area schools in particular, but the prerequisites for most schools include at least Anatomy and Physiology (2 semesters, w/lab), Microbiology (w/lab), biostatistics, and Chemistry (possibly plus one semester of Organic Chem). Each school tends to diverge from there; some require one or two semesters of a social science or psychology; some require nutrition.

There are a lot of programs designed for people who have undergrad degrees in fields other than nursing (accelerated BSN programs -- usually 1.5 years full-time). Then there is the direct-to-master's option, which she might want to consider if she thinks that she will ultimately want to go on to advanced practice nursing or specialize as, say, a nurse-midwife, nurse practitioner, or nurse anesthesiologist.

Some programs have summer sessions that allow you to pack in all your prereqs at once. Some require that your prereqs are all completed before you even apply. So she should definitely make sure she's aware of her schools' requirements.

allnurses has a great discussion forum where she can get all kinds of info. I've become addicted to it!

Best of luck to her!

I don't have all the details, but my cousin who has a BA in Spanish (aka not a sciene degree) is specifically looking into Pace's Nursing School because the don't require you to have a bunch of science pre-requisites like many other programs.
