Bookfilter: A book club slumber party in the school cafeteria

In elementary school (late 80s/early 90s) I read a wonderful book about kids in some sort of school book club that got to have a slumber party in the school cafeteria. I think it was more J(uvenile) than YA. Other details: one character loved The Phantom Tollbooth, there was a scene where they let loose helium balloons with book recommendations tied to them, I learned the word "apropos." What was this book that seemed to be written just for me??

Best answer: Google is coming up with Sixth-Grade Sleepover by Eve Bunting. Google Books is not super helpful, but the search inside function comes up with three references to the Phantom Tollbooth.
