OSX help: how do I get around access privilege problems using target mode?

My iBook screen is dead. Going through the usual steps and some searches has led me to the conclusion that it's not coming back anytime soon... So, I've booted the iBook to my iMac in target mode to recover the files.

Problem: when I try to open /user_a/documents/, I am told that I do not have "sufficient access privileges". How can I get the files in the blocked directories? (I don't have this problem with one of the user directories - of course, I don't need anything from there.)

Best answer: You should usually just be able to Get Info on the file/folders in question, then twirling down the "Ownership and Permissions" group and resetting the access permissions (assuming of course, you're logged in to an Administrator account on your iMac.)

Log in is an admin user (you probably are already). Select the folder, get info (file/get info), open ownership and permissions part at the bottom. Click on the lock, change Owner to you and click on the "Apply to Enclosed Items" button.

on preview, what melorama said.

Response by poster: My lord... 3 minutes. My shame at missing such an obvious solution is easily overshadowed by the relief in getting to the files. Thanks.
