Psychiatrist + Brooklyn Hasidim

Help me find this article online!

A couple of years ago I read a first person account by a doctor in New York who'd been hired by a Brooklyn rabbi to treat Hasidim with serious psychiatric illnesses. I recall he had office hours one day a week in a shabby room with little privacy. Members of the community, both male and female, came for help with their various problems - OCD, delusions, hallucinations.

I recall looking up the doctor online. He was Jewish but I don't believe he was orthodox. He definitely was not Hasidic. He may not have been a psychiatrist, but a general MD with training in psychotherapy.

I may have found the article via The Browser. I can't find it there or in my own browser history. For some reason this has been eating away at me for awhile. It was a moving piece and I'd like to find it again. Maybe someone here can send me in the right direction?

Best answer: This article from Granta is from 2001, but it certainly seems in line with what you describe.
