Shows like She-Ra

Are there any other shows that are 100% gay and 99% female?

I hope I'm not abusing askmefi by asking about a topic as mundane as TV recommendations. Anyway, I loved the lesbian/feminist fantasy that is She-Ra. I liked that it's largely about the power of friendship. I wasn't a huge fan of the fact that it's a good vs evil story, but that's fine. I liked that it's wholesome. The only other lesbian TV show that I know is the original series of The L Word, which I loved ages ago but now seems quite gross for a lot of reasons. Any help? If it's not on Netflix, Amazon, or Youtube I probably won't be able to access it.

Showtime's new show Work in Progress (about a queer butch woman, although she does not describe herself as a lesbian) is terrific and in particular is a breath of fresh air compared to the ways The L Word is gross. It's not on Netflix or Amazon but if you sign up on Showtime's site you can get a 14-day free trial. If you wait til mid-January to do that I think you'll be able to catch the whole first season before the trial is up.

Would Gentleman Jack work? It’s expressly centered on Anne Lister, a lesbian in the 1800s, and her various romances. You can watch it on Amazon for a couple bucks.

Was She-Ra explicitly gay? I don't remember that, but if implied sexuality is OK for you, you might look at Xena Warrior Princess.

L Word just relaunched as Generation Q, cheesy but not gross so far (two eps in).

And if gay like She-Ra is ok then Supergirl, which is our gay TV right now. Skip to season two and watch the chemistry between Lena and Kara as well as the canon relationship between two other women. Most people are women including the baddies.

To me, Steven Universe is the best She-Ra analogue, even though the central character is a boy. All the heroic characters are female-presenting, many of them are in lifelong romantic or non-romantic partnerships with each other, and there's some interesting stuff about gender too. Like She-Ra, it is pitched for kids but enjoyable by adults, and I found it more emotionally complex (I love She-Ra but a lot of the personal growth boils down to "everything is my responsibility and my fault"/"wait no we should work together!" repeated on a loop).

I haven’t seen She-Ra but also came to suggest Steven Universe, seconding everything babelfish posted!

Batwoman is in the same universe as Supergirl and the focus is definitely female and gay. It's the show's first season and there have only been a handful of episodes, so it's easy to catch up at this point.

I have almost never been let down by Autostraddle’s TV recommendations, and I think this big list of lesbian/queer shows you can stream on Netflix will have some good options for you! I kind of wonder if you’d like the newest Tales of the City on Netflix (recommended on this list). To me it reminded me of the L Word and I found myself rewatching it a few times because I always crave representations of queer female friendships, however imperfect.

Broad City is also a great show about female friendship! I can’t remember if it’s just Ilana or if it’s both of them who are bi but it really is a platonic love story between the two friends.

Have you watched any of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic? When I'm very stressed it's a good happy 99.9% female show that calms me. I swear there is some lesbian subtext but it's sub-sub-subtext.

Legend of Korra? She takes a while to figure herself out though...
