Sweater for man with round stomach

What men's clothing brands have more generous sizing around the stomach area? (The size guides never say!) How do I find the larger "Large"s?

Someone I know has asked for a sweater. He says he wears size Large, and I asked if he wanted to send his measurements because I've been noticing how much variation there is in sizing. He said that the larger Larges were better and even that maybe he should go up a size but that he refuses to wear an XL on principle. (I know the feeling.) He has a round stomach that's bigger than his chest. Men's size guides never give the stomach measurement, it seems. Which brands fit men with this body type?

At L.L.Bean, they have various "fits", and Traditional Fit would be the ones to check. Then read the reviews on individual ones to see if they are rated well and listed as true to size or skewing large (vs. the ones reviewers say run small).

Same at Lands End.

I swear by Duluth Trading. Like Lands End, you can get actual garment measurements so you aren’t left guessing on what sizes fit. Call or chat them for the information as it isn’t listed on the website.

I also have a LL Bean anorak sweater and it fits nicely without constricting my gut.

L.L.Bean sweaters have a Tall/Normal dimension too; maybe a Large/Tall would fit, with the extra length being taken up by the belly girth, and would sustain the fiction that he does not need XL.

The models at the Cutter and Buck website are all lean, but in person a lot of their clothes have had a lot of stomach room. They have a Big and Tall section which might be their name for that sizing. And they give size charts for each cut independently.

Buy him an XL and just remove the tag with the size printed on it.

Years ago, when I was still ordering over the phone, L.L. Bean was able to give me actual garment measurements. So that may still be information that is possible to access.

The person you know may have a perfectly good reason to prefer size L if size XL is too large and baggy through the shoulders.
