I Saw A Movie

I saw a movie in the early 1960s. The structure was a boy and girl through the years. It was set in San Francisco and Northern California. Google isn't helping, so I'm turning to the hive mind.

I loved this movie. I have had no luck finding anything about it. It would be great if someone could find out something more about it, or even just tell me you saw it, too, and remember it.

Scenes I specifically remember:

* Young man works as a termite exterminator, and to show her support of him, his girlfriend serves him a cake shaped like a termite.

* They get married, and move into their first home. He tries to make it ultra-safe, but it's destroyed by fire, so he builds a fireproof home that's destroyed by something else, and so on through the last scene of the montage, where he has built the Perfectly Safe Home, and there's a closeup of a stamp coming down on the mortgage: FORECLOSED. They end up happily in a small, regular house.

*Towards the end, their teenage daughter rides off on the back of a motorcycle with her boyfriend.

(I thought it was an early Hal Ashby film, but evidently not. It did have more of a home movie feel than any of Ashby's work.)

Response by poster: Thank you, thank you, dear acidic!

And metafilter is AMAZING. Two hours after I posted this, a new DVD of this movie is on its way to me. What a delight.

I remember seeing this on TV when I was a kid, but it was titled The Illusionless Man and the Visionary Maid. I still remember the scene where she shows him the cake (I remember it as a cockroach, not a termite). He balks at having any, she cries, and he relents, saying, "Oh, all right. I'll have a drumstick."

Bricoleur, the link indicates that what you remember is the name of the short story on which the film was based.
