Where to buy custom basic gold jewelry nowadays?

I want to buy some custom jewelry -- probably a bracelet or necklace, with some kind of engraving of a short message (haven't quite figured out what I want yet). I've had bad and so-so luck with previous jewelry purchased from well-reviewed Etsy sellers, but I also don't want to go to, like, Tiffany. What's in between those two?

I haven't gotten a good vibe from a couple of jewelry shops in my neighborhood either, but if you have an LA-based shop to recommend that's good.

I'm going to be looking for some basic combo of gold chain + small charm or engraved plate. And I'd rather pay a little more to get a quality piece I'll be able to keep and wear for years.

I've been a customer of Ben and Kathryn at the Silver Bonsai Gallery down in Manteo NC since they opened. Both are accomplished and innovative goldsmiths, and I have purchased multiple , beautiful items from them over the years.

Accents Jewelry in Santa Monica is great for custom work and is one of my favorite places in all of Los Angeles.

Really any basic jeweler can engrave a small plate on a gold or silver chain. The question you should ask is if they do machine engraving or hand engraving. The latter is a skilled craft that makes the result so much better. I would call local jewelers, either large or small and ask how they do their engraving.
