I am looking for a good layman's biography of Frederick Douglass. I am aware of Prophet of Freedom, but I am looking for something more approachable for a teenager.

Best answer: Tanya Bolden's Facing Frederick is written for a young adult audience and got great reviews from Kirkus, Booklist, and School Library Journal. (I haven't read it, but I've read and really liked other books by Bolden.)

This is obvious and I’m sure you’ve thought of it, but the Narrative of... is very vivid and approachable itself.

Seconding LizardBreath, I read the Narraitve of... when I was a teenager and it made a huge impact on me. In fact, I think I'll pick it up to read it again soon.

Best answer: The Life of Frederick Douglass is a great graphic novel biography.

Perhaps as a supplement, the BBC's In Our Time podcast did an episode on Douglas last year.
