Favorite musical collaborations?

Really been enjoying the Sting/Shaggy and TajMo collaborations lately. What else should we be listening to? We’re open to anything. Willie and Taylor? If it’s good, why not? Tribute compilations of kinds might be fun too.🎶

From 2013: Daft Punk, Pharrell Williams, Nile Rodgers: Get Lucky. The former two are darlings of the new millennium; Nile foreshadowed and inspired large swaths of hip hop, dance and funk, since 1977. He was a musical hero to Daft Punk, and after they sampled him extensively for decades, he collaborated on several tracks of their album Random Access Memories

I have really enjoyed Aesop Rock + Kimya Dawson = The Uncluded

Jack White and Loretta Lynn
Danger Mouse and Karen O (as Lux Prima)
Yann Tiersen and Shannon Wright
Brian Eno has done a lot of good ones
Sam Beam and Jesca Hoop (though the music is pretty similar to Iron and Wine / her solo stuff)

I honestly never listened to St Vincent w Tony Bennett but that's a weird one

Also, Songs of Our Native Daughters is stunning. It's a collaboration between four acclaimed contemporary black female musicians, including Rhiannon Giddens, (re)interpreting slave songs, songs from minstrel shows, and more. Haunting.

Response by poster: I can already tell this is going to be a fun journey. I should have been more specific though; I am seeking whole albums, not just single songs. Thanks all! 😃

Brian Eno and David Byrne - My Life in the Bush of Ghosts

It's old now (as am I... *sigh*) but the soundtrack from the 1997 film Spawn has earned a spot on my playlists for years. It features a heavy artist collaborating with a techno artist, so you have tracks by Henry Rollins & Goldie, Filter & The Crystal Method, Korn & The Dust Brothers, etc. It's held up surprisingly well.

And if you're open to amateur hour, I participate in a group that puts out a collaborative tribute compilation every month. The Amy Winehouse - Back To Black tribute held on to my earbuds for a minute or two, but they all have gems.

Raising Sand by Robert Plant (of Led Zeppelin) and Alison Krauss (of bluegrass fame) is wonderful.

"Till the night is gone" is a tribute to Doc Pomus. It includes artists like Brian Wilson, Bob Dylan, Los Lobos, and John Hiatt covering songs like "Sweets for my sweet" and "Save the last dance for me".

The link above takes you to the full album, with great audio quality.

I love TajMo, too. And both as separate artists.
Here's a link to a concert by Larry Carlton and Lee Ritenour including interview material about their collaboration, including mentions of the compromises made in their similar, but divergent, styles. There are links provided to album material.

St. Vincent and David Byrne did a whole album together: Love This Giant

Seconding Raising Sand. It's in the running for the best album of music of any kind ever made as far as I'm concerned.

Rough Mix, Ronnie Lane & Pete Townshend has been a favorite of mine since forever (though the album title is apt, they're each playing their own songs, more than a true collaboration)

Tower of Song is a collection of covers of Leonard Cohen songs; can be a little hit or miss (but don't miss Billy Joel positively owning Light As The Breeze)

If collaboration includes setting unpublished/unrecorded lyrics from a legendary songwriter (Woody Guthrie) to music, then the two Mermaid Avenue albums by Wilco & Billy Bragg deserve a mention. (Your new favorite song: Remember the Mountain Bed)

Elton John did a very fine thing setting up a farewell collaboration with Leon Russell, The Union

Psyence Fiction - UNKLE is mostly James Lavelle & DJ Shadow, but with an amazing cast of collaborators: Thom Yorke, Richard Ashcroft, Beastie Boy Mike D, Mark Hollis, etc. Trip hop, I guess? Great album. It grows on you, like metallic space fungus.

Not such a huge Dave Matthews fan, but he and Jurassic Five made "Work It Out," which is one of my fave songs I can play in the car with all my kids (and they don't roll their eyes or complain.)
