ADHD 20-something in Boston needs psychologist

Hey there.. so, my 20-something son going to school in Boston needs a new psychologist, who specializes in ADHD and can prescribe medication for the same. We can get a list from his college, but that's hit or miss, and his doctor at home doesn't have any suggestions, as they don't know anyone in the area.

He's able to self-manage, mostly, but just needs someone that can give him some new coping strategies with the stresses of school and work, as well as prescribe meds (otherwise, he has to come home ever couple of months to see his doctor here, then go back and forth).

Thanks for your suggestions, etc.. feel free to mail me directly if you don't want to post out here.

Psychologists don't prescribe medication. That would be a psychiatric nurse practitioner or a psychiatrist.

The school doesn't have a dedicated mental health clinic for prescribing? Prescriptions for ADHD are fairly straightforward.

CHADD.org has a Boston chapter it seems. That will probably yield some quality referrals. Your son may need to attend a support group to find out what providers are good in the area, or perhaps can call the local chapter.

Contact your health insurance provider, they are likely to have lists of mental health care providers that they cover. If he has student health insurance, contact that.

Your son absolutely should not set foot in your college or university mental health clinic without confirming with current or former students that that clinic has benefited people like him (diagnosed, medicated) in the past. The assurances of mental health care providers are less than worthless on this point. I speak firmly here because I made this mistake, I've seen others make it, and a shitty school mental health clinic is worse than nothing.

Response by poster: Yes, sorry, keep mixing up the terminology.. psychiatrist. I'll look at CHADD.

Assume I've already called my insurance, and have a list from the school, and all that. I'm looking for someone who has experience with someone they would recommend. As opposed to going through the whole trial and error we have been through locally until getting a good recommendation from friends.
