How can we change the privacy setting on a big Facebook group to Public?

We are a 501c4 nonprofit, and we have an official Facebook Page, and an official Facebook Group. A group admin recently changed the group's privacy setting from Public to Secret. We now want to change it back to Public. How can we do that?

According to Facebook, you cannot change the privacy setting of a group with more than 5,000 members from Secret to Public. (Screenshot of privacy settings here, full explanation from Facebook is here.)

A large number of Facebook groups went secret recently because there were reports that Facebook groups were being mass-reported by bots and deleted. e.g. Thousands of Facebook Groups Go Secret in Fear of the Great 'Zuccing'

While Facebook is subsequently offering to help groups that were infiltrated or sabotaged, it's not clear if this includes groups that went Secret in response to the threat. (Facebook says it will restore groups infiltrated by saboteurs)

The group is approximately two and a half years old, and has around 15,000 members. The privacy change was made about a week ago.

Is there some way we can get through to Facebook to update the group privacy setting to Public? Is there some other solution to this problem? Thanks!

Have you reported the issue to Facebook using their tools? Or if you advertise with Facebook, it might be worth using the support channel there to get more attention (because money talks :P). They’re typically pretty rigid about their rules, but given the situation they might decide to make an exception.

If you know someone who works at the company, I also know that employees can report issues internally and at least get them an expedited second look.

Otherwise, my best suggestion would be to create a new, public group and add all your existing members there. Post about the change in your existing group, and explain that new posts should go there. Then archive the old group.
